How the Sun Came to Be
Long ago there was a man named Hugo and a woman named Alice. Hugo and Alice loved each other dearly and were the happiest people in their village.Their love for each other was a powerful force. They were very wealthy as well. But their was one thing they wanted more than all of their riches. A child. But fate never gave them what they wanted most.
One morning when Hugo woke up, he saw his beautiful wife. They got dressed and went downstairs as they normally did and Alice prepared Knackebrod and fil. “God Morgon” Hugo greeted his wife. “God Morgon” Alice replied cheerfully “I have good news my dear man! We have been blessed with a barn!” “ A barn how delightful!” the husband exclaimed lifting his wifes old delicate body and twirling her around. “Now we are the happiest people in Boden. No in all of Sweden!” said the husband.
“Yes i’m sure you are but not for long!” the powerful voice boomed around the couples ears. Just then Vali, the god of revenge, rammed through the door. “Oh powerful Vali!” the wife said in great fear “Please have mercy on us! We haven’t caused you harm!” she walked back regretful of what she had said trembling. “I have come to make sure your baby is nice and healthy for when it is born for I need the product of true love to cast a curse to defeat my enemy!” “Please! Vali this is the thing we want most in the world!” Hugo cried. The god stepped forward, his masculine body towering over the trembling couple. “I will get what I want!” he roared. Then he disappeared.
“We must protect our child!” the wife spoke as she sobbed into her husband's shoulder. “Yes we must.” Hugo said comforting his wife. “We must run. seek help from Sjöfn the goddess of true love who gave us our love and protect our child! We are not safe here Vali knows where we are.” Alice lifted her head with a sniffle. “When shall we leave then?” “Now” Hugo replied.
So the couple set out to search for Sjofn. But after only 8 miles the goddess found them just as the couple took out their water skins to drink. “Young Alice and Hugo I have heard you seek my presence.” the beautiful golden haired goddess said gracefully. “ Yes!” Hugo replied. “ We know you have blessed me and my wife with our love and we need your gracious help!” “Yes I know.” the Goddess spoke softly “ you wish my help so I may protect you and your child from Vali but I may not.” “You can’t?!” said Alice “ Please are you sure there is nothing you can do to save our baby?” “I’m afraid I can’t but you can.” said Sjöfn in a serious voice. “Us?” Hugo asked “What must we do?”. The goddess bit her lip and spoke even more silently “You must show an act of the purest magic. But i’m afraid I have already told you too much.” And with that she disappeared. Gone in a flash.
“But what must we do to save our child?!” Alice pleaded. she began to cry again. “I suppose our baby is all Vali’s now.” Hugo didn’t know what to say because despite the fact he agreed with Alice he didn’t want to admit it. “We-we can find another way…. she said to find the purest……magic. But we are mere mortals. We posses no magic.” Hugo said his voice dropping. “We cannot save our child.” “I’m glad to hear that!” Vali boomed as he appeared out of the mist. “Now you can just hand over your baby or die so I have it!” he flushed with rage. “Our baby hasn’t been born yet!” Hugo said stronger, standing up to the villan. Just then Alice gave a gasp as she collapsed onto the floor. her baby was coming then and there. Hugo stood in front of his wife and said with great confidence “If you want our baby you're going to have to go through me!” Vali looked as if he was considering something for a moment then pulled out his bow and arrow lit it into eternal light and shot it right at Hugo. But at the last second Alice jumped in front of her husband and planted a quick kiss on her husband's lips. All of the sudden a force field surrounded them. The arrow hit it stuck for a second then fell to the floor. Vali gave a grunt then sent another then another but the arrow never hit them. “Fine then keep your baby but I will defeat you!” then he disappeared.
“What happened?” asked Hugo. “An act of pure magic. True love!” Alice replied. “we get to keep our baby!” the couple hugged with affection. But Hugo’s eyes traced to the ground to see the arrows that Vali had shoot laid on the floor but had been woven together into a large ball of blinding light. “Alice what shall we do with this ball of light?” Hugo asked referring to the ball of light Alice looked down to see it as well and replied gently “we shall put it in the sky for all to see for it is a symbol of our true love.” And the couple threw it so high into the air it went beyond into the stars. And it is still there till this day and if you were to look into the sky during the day you will see it. As a reminder that though the couple has passed on their love will always be eternal and that love is the greatest magic of all.
